Float above coral gardens and shoals of tropical fish – snorkelling is the easiest way for anyone to discover the Andamans’ underwater world.
Many of the best spots are close to shore and ideal for first-timers: North Bay, a short boat ride from Sri Vijaya Puram; Elephant Beach on Swaraj Dweep; and the beaches of Shaheed Dweep. Further afield, the Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor protects some of the region’s most beautiful reefs.
Look down and you’ll find branching and brain corals, sea anemones with clownfish, parrotfish, butterflyfish and, if you’re lucky, a turtle gliding past.
Good to know
- You don’t need to be a strong swimmer – operators provide masks, fins and life jackets, and guides stay close by.
- Calm seas and the clearest water are usually found between November and May.
- Choose licensed operators, and never touch or stand on coral.
