Getting Here Is Easier Than You Think

The main gateway to the islands is Veer Savarkar International Airport (IXZ) in Sri Vijaya Puram (Port Blair).

By Air

Flying is the fastest and most convenient way to reach the Andamans, with regular flights from major Indian cities including Chennai, Kolkata, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam and New Delhi. Routes and schedules vary by airline and season, so check current connections when planning your trip.

By Sea

For a more leisurely journey, passenger ships sail to Sri Vijaya Puram from Chennai, Kolkata and Visakhapatnam, with schedules published by the Directorate of Shipping Services. The voyage typically takes 3–4 days, depending on the route, vessel and weather.

Getting Around the Islands

Ferries are the main way to reach popular islands such as Swaraj Dweep (Havelock) and Shaheed Dweep (Neil). Government ferries run by the Directorate of Shipping Services and private operators connect Sri Vijaya Puram with the major tourist destinations. Schedules change with the season and weather, so plan ahead.

In and around Sri Vijaya Puram, you’ll find local taxis, buses, auto-rickshaws and rental two-wheelers.

Good to Know

Indian citizens do not need a passport to visit the Andaman Islands. Foreign nationals should carry their passport, a valid Indian visa and any documents required under the Restricted Area Permit (RAP) rules. Access to some islands and protected areas is restricted, so international visitors should check the latest requirements before travelling.

Travel tip: If Swaraj Dweep or Shaheed Dweep is on your itinerary, book your inter-island ferries in advance, especially during the peak season.

Discover North Bay

A short boat ride from Sri Vijaya Puram, North Bay is one of the best places to experience the Andamans’ underwater world. Depending on conditions and availability, choose from snorkelling, scuba diving, sea walking, glass-bottom boat rides, jet skiing and other water sports.

Explore Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep

Just offshore from Sri Vijaya Puram, the former Ross Island blends history and nature. Wander among colonial-era ruins slowly being reclaimed by the forest and enjoy sweeping views across the harbour.

Chase a Sunset at Chidiya Tapu

For a quieter side of South Andaman, head to Chidiya Tapu, known for its greenery, coastal scenery, birdlife and glorious sunsets. It makes a perfect afternoon escape from Sri Vijaya Puram, especially for nature lovers and photographers.

Venture to Baratang

If you have a little more time, Baratang offers a very different Andaman experience. The journey crosses the tropical landscape of Middle Andaman, then winds through mangrove creeks to the famous limestone caves and the island’s unusual mud volcano. Travel through protected tribal reserve areas is regulated and follows designated routes and timings.

Dive into the Andaman Sea
